A fun day for volunteers!
With the help of a Community Services Program Grant from Disability, Housing and Community Services, Volunteering ACT held a large community event at the Yarralumla Woolshed on the 5th December 2006. This event gave community organisations the opportunity to celebrate International Volunteer Day, by recognising and attempting to reward the immeasurable contribution that volunteers make to our community.
Volunteers donate many hours to ensure the well being and safety of others throughout the region and surrounding areas. With approximately 42% of the ACT population volunteering in one way or another, Volunteering ACT, as the peak body for volunteering in the ACT, sees this event as an integral part of their involvement in the community.
International Volunteer Day (IVD) provides an opportunity for volunteer-involving organisations and individual volunteers to work together on projects and campaigns promoting their contributions to economic and social development at local, national and international levels. Celebrating IVD is a unique opportunity for government agencies, non-profit organisations, community groups, the private sector and volunteer-involving organisations to work together to attain common goals.
Volunteers and their families were entertained by the Casual Projects, Dynamic Studios and the Monaro Folk Society, who brought the day to life with traditional folk dancing and provided opportunities for volunteers to join in. The event was officially launched at 6pm by Mary Porter AM, Member for Ginninderra in the ACT Legislative Assembly. She thanked the volunteers for their efforts and acknowledged their contributions to the community.
We would like to thank the various businesses and organisations for their assistance, contributions and donations: GSpot catering, Jumping J Jays, Bunnings Warehouse, St John Ambulance, ACT Brumbies, Casual Projects and ACT Scouts.
