The establishment of a Child and Family Centre in Gungahlin, the appointment of the ACT's first Small Business Commissioner and an agreement to breathe new life into City West were among the Government's proudest achievements during the first year of The Canberra Plan, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said yesterday.
Reporting on the Government's progress in implementing the Plan, Mr Stanhope said a great deal of work had gone into developing the three components of the Plan-The Canberra Social Plan, The Canberra Spatial Plan and The Economic White Paper-and he was pleased that so much progress had been made towards translating the Government's vision into reality. <more> |

Women who have made outstanding contributions to the ACT community have been recognised and honoured at the ACT International Women's Day Awards being held this evening, Tuesday 8 March.
The ACT Minister for Women, Ms Katy Gallagher, who presented the awards said, "International Women's Day is celebrated across the world and gives us a chance to recognise the contributions and achievements of all women".
"It is also a time to remember the women around the world who are still fighting for the elimination of discrimination, for gender equity and who are working for peace, human rights and improved living conditions of all women," she said. <more>

Minister for Education and Training, Ms Katy Gallagher MLA, will tomorrow (FRIDAY) present the Country Women's Association Grants for 2005.
The Country Women's Association (CWA) provides support to government and non-government school students who have experienced hardship during their school years, and have the aptitude and commitment to complete Year 12 or a nationally recognised vocational course. Six ACT Year 12 students will be presented with grants worth $350 each. <more> |

The Canberra Father's and Children's Service (CANFaCS) today celebrated the opening of their new office by announcing a new supported accommodation service for homeless dads and their children.
While officially opening CANFaCS' new office, Minister for Disability, Housing and Community Services, John Hargreaves said the service would offer families access to safe, affordable housing and encourage stronger relationships with the broader community. <more>

The ACT has agreed to a request from the Commonwealth to provide engineers to the Maldives to assist the island in its recovery from the Boxing Day Tsunami, announced Acting Chief Minister, Ted Quinlan.
"The two structural and materials engineers from the ACT will be joined by two colleagues from interstate and are likely to head off this Friday night.

The Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Award was first introduced in 1989, recognising young people between the ages of 12 and 25 years who have made a major contribution to the ACT community. This contribution could be in areas including community work, sport, education science, culture, the arts and the environment.

Acting Chief Minister Ted Quinlan today commemorated the second anniversary of the 2003 bushfires at a launch of the design for the ACT Bushfire Memorial.
"The January 2003 bushfires had an enormous and tragic impact on Canberra. Though two years have passed, many Canberrans are still feeling the repercussions from this event," said Mr Quinlan.
"The job of rebuilding our community has been an enormous team effort involving people affected by the fires, their friends, families and neighbours, as well as volunteers, community organisations and members of the public service. Acting Chief Minister Ted Quinlan has announced the commencement from 1 January of the
ACT Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme which requires electricity retailers operating in the ACT to achieve greenhouse gas benchmarks for the electricity they sell.
"Legislation for this Scheme was passed by the ACT Legislative Assembly last August, with the intention that it become operational from the start of 2005. Electricity retailers now have a legal obligation to seek cleaner and greener sources of electricity and to promote more efficient use of electricity in order to achieve their benchmarks," said Mr Quinlan. <more> |
