ACT Government To Donate $500,000 To Red Cross Appeal

29 December 2004
The ACT Government today announced it would donate $500,000 to the Red Cross Appeal to help victims of the Asian earthquake and Tsunami, said Acting Chief Minister, Ted Quinlan.

Furthermore, the Government has approached the Red Cross and asked that volunteers be available to take donations from people attending Canberra's New Years Eve celebrations who may wish to donate to the Red Cross relief fund. <more>

Summernats Working Group Established

Chief Minister and Minister for the Environment Jon Stanhope today announced the establishment of the Summernats Working Group to provide advice on the environmental, economic and social impacts of Summernats utilising a cost/benefit approach.

"The Government committed to holding a review of the Summernats event in order to develop comprehensive research as to the benefits of the event to the ACT," Mr Stanhope said. <more>

16 New Firefighters for the ACT

22 December 2004
Canberra is set to benefit from the services of 16 new firefighters following today's graduation ceremony at the ACT Fire Brigade College.

In presenting the graduation certificates, Minister for Police and Emergency Services John Hargreaves said the 16 recruits were now fully qualified for the large range of roles performed by the ACT Fire Brigade. <more>

ACT Government Receives First Report About Water Storage For The ACT

22 December 2004
Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has received ACTEW Corporation's assessment of the need for additional water storage for the ACT.

The report, An Assessment of the Need to Increase the ACT's Water Storage, concludes that unless the ACT community is prepared to accept water restrictions to recur regularly, the ACT will need more water storage sooner than previously expected. The report claims the ACT is water-rich relative to its population. It suggests the territory has enough water under ACT control to meet the environmental requirements and to supply more than a million people, but storage is currently limited. <more>

Chief Minister Announces $200,000 In Community Grants

Thirty-four community projects will share more than $200,000 in grants designed to enable neighbourhoods and groups in the community to get together and share their common interests.

"The Canberra Community Grants Program is a new ACT Government initiative, under the Canberra Social Plan, aimed at building and supporting community participation based on common interests, neighbourhoods, physical activities and culture," Mr Stanhope said. <more>

Minister Inspects ACT Emergency Services Authority

Minister for Emergency Services and Police, John Hargreaves, today inspected the ACT Emergency Services Authority (ESA) and was briefed on the capabilities of the four services that protect and preserve life, property and the environment in the ACT.

The Minister met with ESA Commissioner Peter Dunn and members of the ACT Ambulance Service, ACT Fire Brigade, ACT Rural Fire Service and ACT State Emergency Service. <more>

'Canberra Gold' Recognises Canberra's Pioneer Citizens

Close to 1000 Canberrans including a woman born in Weetangera in 1909, have been nominated for a new award recognising Canberra's pioneering residents, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope announced today.

The 'Canberra Gold' awards are an initiative under the Canberra Social Plan, recognising residents of the ACT who have lived in the nation's capital for 50 years or more. <more>

Support Services For Canberrans Over The Holiday Period

ACT Minister for Disability, Housing and Community Services, John Hargreaves today reminded Canberrans that a range of government-funded and other support services were available for people experiencing stress or added pressures over the holiday period.

Mr Hargreaves said that while Christmas is the festive season and a happy time for many people, for others it could trigger anxiety over a range of issues, including finances and relationships.

"It is important for people to understand that they are not on their own if they are experiencing difficulties," Mr Hargraves said. <more>

It's Heating Up To Be A Great Summer

It's heating up to be a great summer in Canberra and the region, ACT Tourism Minister Ted Quinlan said today at the launch of Australian Capital Tourism's summer marketing campaign.

Mr Quinlan said Canberra is the ideal place for a summer holiday, with a wide range of events, exhibitions and experiences to suit the most discerning visitor.

"This summer, we will be hosting a range of wonderful exhibitions that will only be in Canberra, such as the Summer of Silver photographic exhibitions at four of Australia's best national institutions and the Vivienne Westwood retrospective at the National Gallery of Australia. Chief Minister Announces More Than $430,000 For Our Most Vulnerable

7 December 2004

Two projects tackling issues that leave Indigenous Canberrans among the most disadvantaged members of our community will receive Community Inclusion Grants totalling more than $430,000 over three years, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope announced today.

"Through the Community Inclusion Fund, my Government is providing assistance to the most vulnerable members of our community," Mr Stanhope said.

"The Fund is part of a concerted attack on the causes of poverty and exclusion, to ensure that all Canberrans have the opportunity to reach their potential, make a contribution and share the benefits of our community.

"The two projects I announced today, the Birragai Boys Program and the Gugan Gulwan Education Support Program, have a focus on early intervention and increasing educational opportunities in Indigenous communities."

Lake Tuggeranong Sea Scout Takes Off – for Brunei

Jessica Thomas, 17 of Isabella Plains and was surprised to receive a phone call in July saying that she had been selected as the Australian nomination for the Asia-Pacific Region Scout of the Year to be awarded on the 10th Dec at the Regional Scout Conference in Brunei.

Jess has been an active Scout for over 10 years, earning her Queen’s Scout Award as a Venturer last year. She started her fantastic year in January assisting 12,000 Scouts at the 10 day Australian Jamboree in Adelaide. <more>

ACT Government's Women's Grants Program - Reminder

Early in November, ACT Minister for Women, Katy Gallagher launched the ACT Women's Grants program 2004-05, which will provide financial assistance to individuals and groups for the development of activities that improve the status of women in the ACT.

Individuals, informal groups and incorporated organisations are invited to apply for funding in two categories totalling $100,000 for the 2004-05 financial year.

Canberra Writer Wins Tasmanian Bicentenary Award

Volunteering ACT congratulates Phillip Tardif for winning this prestigious award.

Acting Chief Minister Ted Quinlan today congratulated Canberra historian Phillip Tardif, who has won the $5,000 Tasmanian Bicentenary Local History Prize.

Mr Tardif, a senior public servant working in the ACT Chief Minister's Department, was awarded the prize for his work John Bowen's Hobart: The beginning of European settlement in Tasmania.

Mr Quinlan said: "The Tasmanian Bicentenary Local History Prize is a prestigious award. Together with the second prize, the Pacific Bicentenary History Prize, it attracted an impressive field of more than 130 entries. <more>

Seniors to Enjoy 2005 Multicultural Festival in Style and Comfort

A new "seniors' marquee" will allow older Canberrans to enjoy one of the 2005 National Multicultural Festival's biggest attractions in style and comfort, the Minister responsible for Multicultural Affairs, John Hargreaves announced today.

Canberra's Newest Diplomats - Harmony Ambassadors

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope is encouraging young Canberrans from Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds to become Harmony Ambassadors and share their experiences with people in regional New South Wales.

The Harmony Ambassadors project is an initiative of the Migrant Resource Centre of Canberra and Queanbeyan. Fifteen young people aged between 15 and 19 will be selected to take part in a 10-day tour of south-east New South Wales to promote cross-cultural understanding. <more>

Canberrans Encouraged To Celebrate Diwali Mela - The Festival Of Light

ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope today invited Canberrans to join the local Indian community on Wednesday 10 November when he will switch on specially-installed light beams to illuminate the ACT Legislative Assembly and other buildings in Civic Square, in honour of the Indian Diwali Mela.

Diwali Mela, the Festival of Light, is the most important event on the Hindu calendar. It symbolises the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness. The festival is likened to the Hindu version of 'Christmas' as it involves the exchange of gifts and decorating houses with lights on the night of Diwali.

Migrant Resource Centre Calls For Application For Harmony Ambassadors

Medals Reward Long Serving Emergency Workers

Twenty-eight members of the ACT's emergency services with a collective total of 425 years service to the community today received well-earned recognition when they were presented with medals and awards by Police and Emergency Services Minister Bill Wood.

Mr Wood said National Medals had been awarded to members of the Fire Brigade, the Ambulance Service, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service in recognition of 15 years of diligent service. <more>

Health benefits found in volunteer work

People who do volunteer work are happier, healthier and do better in school, a British study published Monday said.

Surveys of 101 randomly selected districts throughout Britain were taken by the Economic & Social Research Council in Swindon, and found another benefit to high-volunteer populations included a lower crime rate.

At the beginning of Adult Learner’s Week, Katie Gallagher was pleased to recognise the outstanding contribution of Scouting to intergenerational learning in the Canberra.

Last Friday, Sandra Fox from the Technical and Adult Education Branch, attending a Scouting Awards night, presented the certificate to the Chief Commissioner, Mr Neville Tomkins and President, Mrs Philippa Muller in front of 120 guests and 31 leaders receiving Good Service Awards for over 225 years of combined service. Sandra is a former leader in NSW and Victoria with over 20 years commitment to Scouting. <more>

National Child Protection Week 2004

Minister for Children, Youth and Family Support, Katy Gallagher MLA today reminded Canberrans that National Child Protection week starts tomorrow (5th September) and will run from until the 11th September (next Saturday).

In 2003, 40,000 children were abused and/or neglected in Australia - a 33 per cent increase in the last year alone. Child abuse and neglect is a serious social problem not only in the ACT, but across Australia.

The focus is often on the problem: the horror, pain and anger of the harm and maltreatment. National Child Protection Week is an opportunity to focus on the solution. <more>

Bovis Lendlease Community Involvement Day

Bovis Lendlease, a large construction company, conduct a community involvement day each year with their Canberra staff.

In the past they have been involved in gardening, maintenance and small building projects.

Fire Fighters And Volunteers Recognised

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope today presented the first round of the ACT Emergency Medal and Lapel Pin to those who were involved in defending and supporting Canberra during the January 2003 bushfires.

Groups representing uniformed personnel received the ACT Emergency Medal, while representatives of the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul and the ACT Public Service received the ACT Emergency Lapel Pin. <more>

Stage 3 Restrictions To Be Reintroduced 1 September 2004

Stage 3 restrictions will be reintroduced in the ACT and Queanbeyan on 1 September 2004 following the second driest autumn and winter period on record, said Treasurer Ted Quinlan.

The ACT region has been facing drought conditions for more than two years. Canberra has been in restrictions since December 2002 and this summer will be no different. <more>

$50 000 To Bridge Disability Digital Divide

People with disabilities in the ACT are to benefit from a $50 000 funding package to bridge the ‘digital divide’ under the ACT Government’s Community IT Access Plan.

Disability, Housing and Community Services Minister Bill Wood said the funding would help people with a disability buy computer equipment and services so they can better access information technology. <more>

The Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Gary Hardgrave, today welcomed the introduction of the Translating and Interpreting Service’s (TIS) new Automated Telephone Interpreting Service (ATIS), which will make access to interpreting services easier.

ATIS is a multi-function ‘Interactive Voice Response Unit’ that allows English speaking clients to connect directly with an interpreter in one of the 18 TIS high demand languages. <more>

ACT Tackles Insurance Crisis

Community Insurance Scheme to Continue

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope today announced that the Community Care Public Liability Insurance Scheme will continue in the ACT at least until 31 December 2006.

The announcement follows a decision by the ACCC to allow continuation of the scheme.

Canberrans Need To Stay Focused On Stage 2 Targets

Going from Stage 3 to Stage 2 water restrictions on March 1 this year we are currently only achieving a 15 per cent reduction rate, Deputy Chief Minister Ted Quinlan said today.

"Ideally we would like to have met the 25 per cent reduction, but the unseasonably warm weather over March and April and combined with very little rain, (in April 0.8 mm compared with the average of 56 mm), means that it is unlikely that we will do so. <more>

Young people awarded $10,000 for youth projects

Youth Interact Grants are for young people aged 12 - 25 years old who wish to organise events, projects, programs or activities for other young people in the ACT region. Up to $1,500 is available for each project and the grants are offered twice a year. <more>

18th IAVE World Volunteer Conference 2004

Barcelona will be the headquarters of the 18th IAVE World Volunteer Conference that will take place from August 17 to August 21, 2004, inside the framework of the Universal FORUM of Cultures - Barcelona 2004.

The World Volunteer Conference is a biannual celebration promoted by the IAVE that will gather together more than 2000 participants in Barcelona, from more than 100 countries, creating the most important meeting in the world for volunteer movements.
