The ACT Government today announced it would donate $500,000 to the Red Cross Appeal to help victims of the Asian earthquake and Tsunami, said Acting Chief Minister, Ted Quinlan.

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has received ACTEW Corporation's assessment of the need for additional water storage for the ACT.
The report, An Assessment of the Need to Increase the ACT's Water Storage, concludes that unless the ACT community is prepared to accept water restrictions to recur regularly, the ACT will need more water storage sooner than previously expected. The report claims the ACT is water-rich relative to its population. It suggests the territory has enough water under ACT control to meet the environmental requirements and to supply more than a million people, but storage is currently limited. <more> |

ACT Minister for Disability, Housing and Community Services, John Hargreaves today reminded Canberrans that a range of government-funded and other support services were available for people experiencing stress or added pressures over the holiday period.
Mr Hargreaves said that while Christmas is the festive season and a happy time for many people, for others it could trigger anxiety over a range of issues, including finances and relationships.

Two projects tackling issues that leave Indigenous Canberrans among the most disadvantaged members of our community will receive Community Inclusion Grants totalling more than $430,000 over three years, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope announced today.
"Through the Community Inclusion Fund, my Government is providing assistance to the most vulnerable members of our community," Mr Stanhope said.
"The Fund is part of a concerted attack on the causes of poverty and exclusion, to ensure that all Canberrans have the opportunity to reach their potential, make a contribution and share the benefits of our community.
"The two projects I announced today, the Birragai Boys Program and the Gugan Gulwan Education Support Program, have a focus on early intervention and increasing educational opportunities in Indigenous communities."

ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope today invited Canberrans to join the local Indian community on Wednesday 10 November when he will switch on specially-installed light beams to illuminate the ACT Legislative Assembly and other buildings in Civic Square, in honour of the Indian Diwali Mela.
Diwali Mela, the Festival of Light, is the most important event on the Hindu calendar. It symbolises the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness. The festival is likened to the Hindu version of 'Christmas' as it involves the exchange of gifts and decorating houses with lights on the night of Diwali.

Surveys of 101 randomly selected districts throughout Britain were taken by the Economic & Social Research Council in Swindon, and found another benefit to high-volunteer populations included a lower crime rate.

In 2003, 40,000 children were abused and/or neglected in Australia - a 33 per cent increase in the last year alone. Child abuse and neglect is a serious social problem not only in the ACT, but across Australia.

announced that a bill has been introduced into the Legislative
Assembly to stem the rise in insurance premiums through legislating
for proportionate liability and professional standards.
“My Government is serious about dealing with the insurance
crisis, which has resulted in a severe increase in premiums
for liability classes of insurance in Australia,” Mr

Arts Minister Bill Wood today reminded Canberrans to have
their say on the ACT Bushfire Memorial final consultation
process, which has now been extended until 9 July.
“The January 2003 bushfires had a huge impact on the
Canberra community, with different people being affected in

what ACT residents – including many of those most affected

Care Public Liability Insurance Scheme will continue in the
ACT at least until 31 December 2006.
The announcement follows a decision by the ACCC to allow

the work of volunteers by making it easier, safer and/or more

seven recipients of the first $10,000 of Youth InterACT Grants.
Youth Interact Grants are for young
people aged 12 - 25 years old who wish to organise events,

the ACT region. Up to $1,500 is available for each project

Barcelona will be the headquarters of the 18th IAVE
World Volunteer Conference that will take place from August
17 to August 21, 2004, inside the framework of the Universal
FORUM of Cultures - Barcelona 2004.
The World Volunteer Conference is a biannual
celebration promoted by the IAVE
that will gather together more than 2000 participants in Barcelona,
from more than 100 countries, creating the most important
meeting in the world for volunteer movements.
