The Full Monty!

Today Volunteering ACT was proud to recognize the 2004 recipient of the NRMA Insurance Volunteer of the Year Award, at a wonderful ceremony held at the Canberra Racecourse, Clive Monty, is a founding member of the l'Arche Community of Canberra, and was chosen by the judges as this year's Ambassador for volunteers as the Volunteer of the Year. Clive has volunteered for over 20years and has been the driving force behind L'Arche both here and nationally.

Mary Porter, CEO Volunteering ACT, said Clive represents the growing trend in volunteering today, a person who has held s down a busy responsible paid job while volunteering in the community. He has worked for many years in governance roles, steering his organisations through tough financial times and worked on other committees as well as undertaking direct support of people with disabilities.

Clive received his award today along side 11 other fine Canberrans who were recognised for their particular roles in specific areas of endevour. Those also recognised were Val Chesterton Sport and Recreation, Kevin Carey Emergency Services, Peter Hugonnet Arts and Heritage, Chris Van Reyk Health, Roger Killeen and Mandy Scott Education, Michael McDonnell and Mick Andrews Community, Des Maguire and Ian McLeod Science and Technology, Joan Goodrum Environment.

Margaret Reid, former Federal Senator for the ACT presented the Awards today and acknowledging the numbers of volunteers being recognised and the breadth of their work said "What a dull boring world it would be without Volunteers?"

This is the 11th year that NRMA Insurance has partnered with Volunteering ACT in recognising the important work that thousands of volunteers undertake in sustaining the life of the Canberra community.

NRMA Insurance ACT Territory Manager, Phil Newton, congratulated award recipients and said the community spirit of the nation's capital is thriving, "Last year's bushfires may have severely tested Canberra but the way the community rallied other showed a spirit we can all be proud of, this type of spirit is evident in our community, it doesn't take a natural disaster. The Volunteering of the Year Awards allow us to celebrate that spirit and recognise individuals who are helping to improve the wellbeing of our community on a daily basis."
