Can’t Thank You Enough!

Thanking volunteers on International Volunteer Day - Sunday 5th December

International Volunteer Day on Sunday 5th December marks the day we celebrate the significant contribution volunteers make in the ACT and region. In 1985, the United Nations General Assembly declared the 5th December as International Volunteer Day as a day when we can celebrate their contribution worldwide and thank each and every volunteer.

In Canberra 40% of the adult population volunteer regularly, nationally 4.5 million Australians (one in three adults) volunteer per year – totaling over 70.4 million volunteer hours per year.

Mary Porter, out going CEO of Volunteering ACT said “I am proud to have played a part in supporting such a wonderful workforce of unpaid workers. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the community, as we know some of our most vital community services, including, rural firefighting services, environmental programs and health programs, rely heavily on the support of volunteers.”

“Even in our day to day lives, volunteers keep our sporting groups going, our communities safe and assist our children at school.” Ms Porter said, “This is a great opportunity for organisations to thank their volunteers for the contribution they have made in the past year. As a community we have to ask ourselves where we would be without volunteers, so it’s timely that we say thanks.”
